Influencer marketing has caused a huge shift in how marketing is done today.  Influencers are trusted more by consumers than almost any other marketing method out there.  Why are influencers so trusted, because their message is viewed as authentic.  You can still get a healthy return from other forms of marketing, but nothing quite like the power of influencer marketing.  How did influencer marketing come to be?  Let’s have a look.

Ten Years Ago

Back in 2007-2008 it was Twitter and Facebook that were the best places to bring your products to your market.  The two platforms are still effective today although nowhere near what they were back then.  Back then companies with large enough followings can put product placements in your feed and they could get decent traffic.  All of that traffic was organic and free.

In 2010 Instagram came along and now you could take pictures, do a little creative editing and post them to the social media platform.  It didn’t take long for Instagram to dominate as far as engagement went.  Instagram for years was the fastest growing social media site.  Now, Instagram is one of the go to sites for reaching and using influencer marketing.  Here is a look at the explosive growth of Instagram.

Facebook Buys Instagram

In 2012 Facebook purchases Instagram for an insane amount of money and with the two platforms being connected Facebook would once again dominate the world of social media.  While the two platforms differed with Facebook you could take advantage of their advertising and the incredible targeting you could do with their data, it also allowed you to advertise on both platforms.  Instagram was still the king of visual media and there are accounts with millions of followers and those accounts have huge influence.

Viral Content

Viral content is one of the things that make influencers so powerful.  Influencers aren’t just limited to Instagram you will find them on Twitter and YouTube as well.  These are accounts owned by regular people who aren’t celebrities but they have managed to build big audiences just by creating some incredible content.  They leveraged this content into huge audiences they can tap into whenever they like.

Today more people rely on recommendations from influencers and this is why influencer marketing is so successful.  It is a genuine person recommending a genuine product that resonates with the audience. Big brands are turning to influencers and paying a great deal of money for shout outs and endorsements.
